Next shiny thing. Except I wasn’t watching the boat dog and she shredded the mounting template. My fault. Gawd I don't know how to post photos. But she does look guilty.

Looks like the backing plate could be used as a template.

Found it online and saved the .pdf. Need to double check scaling in case the .pdf is somehow “sized”

I had to cut a teak pad to mount mine on the deck. There was an arch in the deck that required some trial and error woodworking to get everything flush. The backing plate underneath was 12”X12”— 8 ply marine plywood bedded to the underside of the deck in West epoxy 403 filler at a peanut butter consistency. You might think about putting a plastic jug around the motor and gear box as water and spray will come down the hawse hole and corrode stuff. Easily done while you are in there. Be sure to put a chain stopper in the system and be careful about backing down or trying to break the anchor out of the bottom with the pressure on the windlass bearings. Don’t ask how I learned this.

Just bought a new Maxwell, to replace my Ideal Capstan. Trying to install before heading south this fall. Plan on using teak lumber.

Well, it's time to contemplate winterizing and getting a cover on the boat anyway, so I'll have time to figure out how to nuance the mounting. I liked the idea of a divided anchor locker and some form of hull protection for the chainfall.

I got 150' of G4 at $3.50/foot. I think I'm going to take 25 to 30' of that for either a lunch hook or second bow anchor. I may need to replace the bow roller as well to accommodate a Rocna or the other one.

Thank you, Mr. Durkee. Hadn't thought about protecting the motor, which I've noted is usually the area of first problems after extended use.

I replaced my well pump and hose a few years ago and the remnants of the hose were up back in the woods. I think that, some 1.5" doweling, spruce strapping and sitting and staring for awhile, with 4 tarps, will get me a nice, tight cover. The whole shrink wrap thing seems like a total waste of plastic. There are piles of it around the boatyard from last year, useless trash.

Got the windlass installed, used a plywood backing plate. Getting the teak cut and cutting holes in the boat was fun. Happy with results.

Yeah we use to have an Ideal Capstan for rope and used the dorade vent for the hause pipe. I'm leaving it for added ventilation in the chain locker.

That's a nice windlass. I looked at Maxwell, Lewmar and Muir. I got a Muir Storm 1250 with capstan, 150' of good quality G4 and all the bells and switches. Price drove it, and I'd have gone with either of the others if could've gotten the entire mess for the same price as easily. I'm going to go with the teak pad as well, I guess, and see if I can scribe it to the deck and whittle what's needed.

Whadid you put under the teak? I'm getting partial to Boat Life above the waterline and 4200 below.
