Ray, I may end up checking that in the end... I spoke to Jim last night and I guess my next order of business is to pull the starter and take a look. Something I've learned by talking to him,,,, there are two different starters on the 37C model. I assume this is because there is more than one "W50" in them... one Westerbeke, the other may be Universal..or Perkins 105 ?.. I think all are based on the same block but different external features depending which company marinize the engine. It's a good topic for another entirely different post. I'll record what I find and take pictures on the rebuild IF I rebuild it.

It would be great to find someone at Tartan that knows the history on that if it exists.

So.... I ended up ordering an after market starter for $196 on ebay. It looks like an exact replacement for the original starter that came with the engine; took about 30 minutes to take out.... and about 15 minutes to put back. When I hit the starter button it fired right up. This starter has a 3 hole flange. Some starters on Tartan 37Cs may have only a two hole flange.... different models of the W50 ? ,,, perhaps.

I could tell the new starter had much more power than the old one. I plan on keeping the old one and rebuild it.

On Ebay....DB Electrical $196.46 discounted, lists for $294.

Glad to hear that you resolved your issue. Wonder if you can rebuild a old starter for $200? Seems like bargain. I was able to get an exact duplicate of my Yanmar’s 80 amp alternator (stamping on the case was even the same) new on Ebay for $60 to use as a spare. Was not expecting that—just thought I was buying something to limp to the next harbor.

I've been promising that I would provide for the Forum lessons learned from my attempts to repair/replace the starter on my W50. Recently, I worked in collaboration with Mike who just recently replaced his starter and had a much different experience from me.

Anyway, if you want to replace your starter I strongly suggest that you remove your old starter from the boat. The reason is there are different variations of starters that purport they will fit a W50; some will, others won't.

Attached is very unclear picture of my original starter and a starter I bought off the internet. I've posted this to show, for my engine, the mounting bolt holes' orientation are critical. The solenoid needs to be mounted close to vertical and the mounting holes are roughly at the 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock position. The starter I bought bolt holes are rotated roughly 90 degrees (i.e., roughly 7 o'clock and 1 o'clock). There's no way that it would fit.

Attached is a picture showing the orientation for Mike's original starter and the new one he recently purchased on Ebay. They worked fine on Mike's engine, but the bolt hole orientation is similar, if not identical, to the internet purchase I made would and clearly would not work on mine.

To add to the confusion, I did get a new starter from a Westerbeke dealer. It looked like my old starter, had the proper bolt pattern, fitted up well, but.....bendix gear diameter was too large (1.51" vs 1.41"). This caused the starter to jam on the flywheel. So.....more confusion.

I may have ordered starter from Westerbeke (dealer) by part no from the manual that came with my engine. If I did, there is a chance that my boat had a W50 variant with requires a special starter. I know the bell housing is different because replacing the starter is a real challenge (need about a 3 foot extension to remove the lower bolt extending it in from the front of the engine. I had been told that I had a bell housing variant that caused this problem. Anyway, if it is a special starter for my variant only, the bendix gear is wrong.

To summarize, when dealing with your starter:

1. Check the bolting orientation of your existing starter. If it's like Mike's, you're probably in luck. Order a starter from Ebay of Amazon. It's probably OK.
2. If your bolting orientation is like mine, the orientation of readily available starters probably won't work. My first step would be to try to rebuild the old starter. Solenoids and/or rebuild kits are available. I've listed a source for a rebuild kit with my post under "Deals/Buy/Sell" and "Used W50 for sale as whole engine or parts." If you want/need to replace the starter and find one with the proper bolt hole orientation, check the Bendix Gear diameter.

Hope this helps. This was very frustrating for me. I hope I can spare others from the pain

For those of us around the Pensacola area, try B&M Starter and Alternator Services on North Palafox.

I just got my starter rebuilt because it wouldn't do anything but draw juice from the batteries. No click, no dragging. Just a voltage drop.

TT&L was $209.64 with one day service. We brought it in at 08:30 and picked it up at 16:30.

A couple of weeks ago I had my starter rebuilt by Brownings in Norfolk. When they asked If I would wait for it I thought they were kidding me. An hour and a half later they called me and said the paint was drying and come and pick it up. A hundred and twenty five bucks. Top notch job, starter looked and sounded like new. I would recommend these guys anytime.Mark #337

I purchased this one on Ebay.... after engine barely starting over 2 years, it starts now within 30 seconds. I am going to rebuild the old one; I understand it fairly simply to do.... If you purchase one be sure you choose the right model. There are two different W50 models.... the earliest model was hard to work on because it sat inside the engine well,, cogs/gears pointing aft. The newer W50 model which ran starting sits aft of the rear engine and cogs points forward...
$175.00
