Here is a dinghy in davits that's just under 12' LOA along side a dock. Note the majority of the weight is on the starboard purchase and that a halyard is supporting it. The port side has very little load. With this configuration, it would not be possible to move parallel along side a set of piling on the port side as the bow of the dinghy projects beyond the beam of the boat. Another consideration is when under sail, the boat will heel and any projection would hit the quarter wave. We visited a couple clubs over 4 days on this recent trip and motored rather than deflate the dinghy and stow aboard.
