Port side fiberglass finished. Next they'll do the starboard.

Just the bottom paint left to do on the back of the keel. Think it looks really good.

Bottom of the keel is ground down. Then glassed over each side and up a little into centerboard trunk to cover any voids and smooth it out. After this, they'll lift the boat, move the blocks to the center of the bottom of the keel and do the same to the bottom of the keel where the blocks currently are (fore and aft extreme of bottom of keel).

So, we moved the blocks to check the areas under them. The aft looks fine, but the forward area at the front of the bottom of the keel where the centerboard trunk starts needs work for sure and could be a source for leaks due to the obvious voids found while grinding. There's no way to glass over that front lip with all the cracks and voids that is the forward part of the centerboard trunk (the second picture), so the yard is going to cut it away, then rebuild and re glass. Also, while it's cut away, they are going to check the very front area of the centerboard trunk that is inaccessible without this cutting.

Obviously, my bill for all this work continues to grow. "Am I crazy for doing all this" keeps going through my head. Anybody see anything they'd do differently or have any advice?

Hi Zack sorry you're going through boatyard anxiety. I think most of us have been there at some point.
I did the same repairs and haven't regretted them because I like a dry bilge.

Yes it seems that you don't have a lot of choice either, I would imagine you will soon be done though.

I don't doubt that these voids could hold water however are you absolutely sure that water is "oozing" up and through to the bildge ? Water can get in the bildge from a lot of places like: the mast after a rain, stanchions leaking, windless area, stuffing box. Mine is usually caused by rain. During the really dry months of summer when I am not using the motor, my bildge is fairly dry so I'm confident that any water I see in there comes from rain.

The first photo in this series was interesting... the shape of the keel in the back is not the shape of mine,,, the subsequent pictures however do resemble my keel.

Before we moved onto the boat, I certainly attributed the water to the stuffing box and coming down the mast, etc. But after we moved onto the boat, I really started paying attention and investigating where any water was coming from. Also, we had just switched to a dripless stuffing box.

What really made me start wondering was when I tasted it, and it was salt water (very salty, not just a little). So, over months, I spent hours drying completely and watching. I identified two spots where water was beading up. One just behind the bilge area in front of the engine, and one in front of the mast just outside the head. That's when I came across Ganzie's a fore mentioned post. I'm positive that I had the same thing coming up through the hollow part of the keel causing the aft water.

The one forward of the mast is the head scratcher. Believe me, I wanted to think it was water trickling down from the anchor chain locker and picking up salt along the way. Or, water somehow coming from inside the boat getting under the bilge floor and reemerging where I saw it beading up and somehow salty.

In the end, I strongly believe it is water from the outside working it's way through voids in the epoxy slurry that surrounds the lead in the keel. The problem is that we couldn't identify exactly where the water was getting in, and the centerboard trunk is pretty inaccessible. So, we decided to grind the bottom of the keel and re glass as far as we could access to cover all the obvious voids. It looked pretty gnarly anyway. Hopefully the saga will end with me still having a little pocket change to buy rum and other essentials! Smile

Oh, and one other thing. Before we went to this extensive fix that we are doing now, the yard tried to patch from the inside. The yard has put the boat in the water and pulled it back out I think 4 times in the last 3 months before we started all this bottom of the keel work. Each time, we watched as water started coming up at the same spots during the hour after putting the boat back in the water.

Well, living aboard probably gives you a front row seat, but I did the whole bottom of my boat and still had water in the bilge—I spent years chasing it down. Turns out it was a tiny pinhole in the sink through hull fitting. As Mike said, water gets into the bilge from many places and where it shows up seems to rarely be whre the actual leak is.
We will hope for the best with your effort. We have all been there, but at some point you gotta just go sailing. It is not going to sink.
