Hi all

I have just introduced myself to the forum and have a first question:

On a recent cruise I noticed louder than usual noises of wood working and rubbing coming from just forward of the portside lower shrouds. I thought maybe a loose fastener behind a panel.

My boat builder friend had a look and reckons there is too much movement of the bulkhead/knee in the head compartment, when we swing on the shroud from outside.

I have dismantled the head cupboards to see whats going on and it all appears very solid with good strong lay up.

When we yank on the shroud there is a fair bit of movement (approx. 2mm 'deflection' as the boatbuilder says). and it does appear that the bulkhead/knee flexes up and maybe the hull has a bit of movement too.

Does anyone have any experience of the same issue, or know how much movement in this area was either designed in, or is tolerable?

Cheers in advance....

G

There was an issue of flexing in that area on some boats. I took my head apart and epoxied wood strips to the bulkhead. There was some articles in the old Tartan 37 newsletter from the 90's.

My hull #287 had a dry connection on the port forward lower. It was pulling free of the hull. I had it repaired by removing the old epoxy and tabbing and redone with extra wide tabbing. Instead of 3", the shop went out 6" on each side.

File comment: You can see the extra wide tabbing in this picture.

thanks for the replies guys.

my boat builder friend is making noises about the same - extra tabbing/lay up between the bulkhead and the hull.

just a question about your fix Wayne - was it necessary to take the head sink cabinet totally apart for that job, as the bulkhead does not extend all the way down the hull?

No, It was not necessary to remove the sink and cabinetry. That was a separate project. I just used that picture as it showed the tabbing. We didn't take pictures of the bulkhead repair at the time.

Thanks for the guidance...

I thought I'd post some photos of the work I completed - hopefully this will hold things together from now on.

I ended up laying two layers of double-bias glass tape from the shroud bulkhead to both the bulkheads fo'ward and aft. Then a couple more layers reinforcing the joint between b'head and hull. You can see this clearly in the photo of the smaller cabinet cavity.

Then I glued and glassed in a couple of strips of 10mm ply to provide stiffening. There's not much clearance behind the cabinet so couldnt fit any stiffeners in the forward space.

It'll be interesting to see if there's any movement after this operation - There better not be!

Cheers!
