I am rebuilding the raw water pump on my W-50 and I want to confirm the proper installation of the shaft seal. I believe the open side (you can see the spring inside the seal) faces the "wet" side of the impeller. The water pressure is supposed to get inside that rubber seal and force it against the impeller shaft. Is that correct as far as anyone knows? It is the way the seal that is coming out is set. I just want to make sure I don't repeat a previous mistake if one has been made.

I just rebuilt one a few months ago. That rubber black seal is just pushed into place. My old one had a little spring ring that was supposed to hold it tighter around the shaft but it wasn't big enough to do any good in my opinion so I didn't use it when I shoved the shaft seal into place...... after several months... no leaks. Good luck.

You're correct. The seal should be installed so pressure aids the seal. I've rebuilt my pumps many times. For some of the kits, it's not always obvious which side of the seal is open. In those cases, I did my best to identify the open side and installed the seal. Never had a problem.

I'm also looking at rebuilding my jabsco pump as I have some signs of water leakage at the weep hole at the bottom of the pump.

Did you use the Major or the Minor rebuild kit? Did you have to replace the shaft?

I don’t remember. I do know that the impeller kit did not include a shaft seal.
