re-doing floor

Hi
I am going to re-do the floor on our boat. A few years ago I sanded it down stained it and used a water base polyurethane. It didn't hold up very well so I am thinking of stripping the old finish off and using a different product to protect the floor. Any ideas what is a good product to use. I've been told about varnish, some people use oil...Just curious what other people have used.

If we are leaving the boat for an extended timeframe (month+), Connie's last task on the boat is to oil the floor with teak oil on her way out. That gives it time to soak in before we use the boat again. And the floor is not slippery with bare feet. YMMV

I use wipe able polyurethane by Minwax. Each year I lightly sand it and put down 2 coats. It lasts the full season. It's real easy to apply. I pour it on in small puddles and spread it with a paper towel. I let each coat dry over night. If you read the instructions, this is not the way to apply it and they don't recommend it be used on floors but it works fine for me. I started using it when I tried regular polyurethane for floor use and it was a disaster. It was/is too cold here to use regular polyurethane in the early Spring. The wipe able polyurethane seems to work ok in this damp and colder weather.

I put down regular old bright varnish (Epiphanes) and have no problem. It is not slippery even though it is shiny. You might recall that there was a product called Sole Something which is no longer available which claimed not to be slippery---after testing it at a boat show, I could see no difference in its "slipperyness" from regular varnish. Been using standard varnish for 20 years--redone it probably 3 times.

I have Minwax's Helmsman urethane finish down and after several years, it still looks good. It is an oil-based, gloss finish and really isn't all that slippery surprising enough. I suppose it has a similar result as using a varnish. http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/cle ... r-urethane

My previous boat, I used Waterlox which is a tung oil based finish that has hardeners in it, it held up very well too and it is water/chemical resistant. Probably easier to apply than the urethane. http://www.waterlox.com/

Both products can be found in hardware stores.....saving $$$ by not going marine.

My Tartan inside teak is oiled, do you think the Waterlox would work applied over it. I'm looking for a non glossy finish, I like the look of oiled teak.

I'm planning to redo my floors with Amtico teak and holly vinyl, maybe next Summer. They are looking stained and uneven.

If you were to apply Waterlox over a previously oiled product, I would to a test area first. Wipe it down with acetone first to remove any residue then let dry (only a minute since acetone evaporates quickly) then use a clean rag or a brush/rag combination to apply the Waterlox. let dry overnight, reapply. You would need about three coats I would think.
