My spinnaker halyard wraps around the upper swivel of my jib furler when not in use. Because of this, I've removed the halyard for years. What have others done to eliminate this problem? I've seen some attach the halyard to the pulpit rail and I've seen others attach the halyard to the mast after running it aft of the spreaders. I've got my mast removed this off-season so I'd like to reinstall the halyard if I can eliminate this problem.

I installed a halyard retainer to keep it from snagging the top furler swivel.

Thanks for the response but I have that device for my jib halyard. It helps to improve the halyard's angle to the head stay so the jib halyard doesn't wrap. To clarify, my problem is with the spinnaker halyard which runs from a block swinging from a horizontal stainless loop which extends over the head stay. When the halyard drops straight down when not in use and secured to the mast, it gets caught on the upper swivel.

I just place my spinnaker leads behind the spreader - have never had a problem since doing this, easy and free fix!

I just replaced my spin halyard due to premature wear from the upper jib swivel. I hope someone has an answer.
Cheap.

Ahh, there's the difference, my spin halyard exits from the mast head sheaves not from a bail extension like yours..............nevermind!

Thanks Tom. You may have my solution. I can run the spinnaker halyard through the sheave only which I plan to do and use it as a spare halyard. I don't have a spinnaker but have a MPS. From your experience, should that work?

The easiest solution is to put a crane extension on top of the mast to get the spinnaker block away from the mast. There are several reasons to do this. I think using the spare halyard for a spinnaker halyard is not a great idea as it could jam in the sheave.
