Hi All,
After adding the custom davits and all the other weight to the rear of Running On Empty I decided I should remove all of the lead shot to try and lighten up the aft end of the boat...I now am getting salt water up to the plywood piece that is glassed in behing the water heater. I have pumped it out, but it fills back in. Going away from the boat on the launch yesterday I noticed rust bleeding from the bolts that hold on the back stay straps, so I figure this can't be good!

Any thoughts or ideas where the water could be coming in?
She is sitting lower in the water since I have provisioned and loaded her down with all the necessary food, beer, etc. for the Bahamas.

Thanks,
Joe

I had some counterweight all the way aft below the helm seat lazaratte that I vacuumed out for hours! But I added all of the weight of my davits, Honda generators, dinghy, motor, etc., so I was trying to stop the boat from pulling a wheelie.

Not a lot of options, X2 on the rudder post,or, rudder pintle bearing bolts way down right below lazarette seat ,or,prop strut bolts which are under the water tank ply base . Also, rust stains weeping from stainless need investigating, easy to take off back stay strap and check it and its bolts are not suffering from the dreaded 'crevice corrosion' Good luck, Bruce.

There is one other place I can immediately think of: The rudder fairing was held in place on my boat by four 3/16" through bolts on the vertical surface just aft and above where the rudder pintle is bolted. Look at this area and see if you can see the nuts and washers of the 4 bolts. This was a source of a drip on Tortuga's Lie before I re-secured this fairing in a different method. I do not know if these bolts were used on all boats. Mine is a North Carolina built model, 1977.

If you have rust on the back stay, that could be a source. One way to check is tasted the water (don't drink) if fresh, the source is a leak when raining. If you have water on the boat, the hot water tank could be the source. If the water is salty check the rudder fairing screws as Tortuga's Lie suggested, the ONLY other source is the 4 big bolts holding the rudder pintle. The rudder post is well about the water line and isn't the source.

I don't think you can trim the boat enough to move that water forward. My boat is very light right now, the aft water line is close to 4in above the water and seawater will still sit in that spot.

In heavy waves, before I changed the rudder post stuffing flax, water would come in from around the post. I added a grease fitting and changed the stuffing flax and don't have any issues now.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. Running On Empty is on the hard now and that area dried up fairly quickly once she was out of the water. I will inspect all of those places when I get back in the fall and probably have many more questions then.
