Before I bought my 1980 Tartan 37 I shop around a lot. I noticed that every boat I looked at leaked a little at the standing rigging chain plates. Some more than most. I was wondering if any one had solved the problem. Some owners I have talked to rebed every year. Any other solutions ?

Ours were pretty far gone when we purchased Persephone. The plates were rebedded, 3M 5200, and no issues in the last two years. Thankfully the bulkheads are heavily laid up fiberglass over marine ply, so the damage was minimal. The deck was pretty soggy; cleaned out as much as I could, used heavy epoxy filler, and some creepy crack hardener in a couple holes.

Tartan Check out the article on Pages 42-43 of the latest edition (March/April 2009)of Good Old Boat magazine. It is titled "Chainplate Islands" and I am likely going to be doing this project when the weather warms up. It appears to be a simple and elgant solution to the problem!

Persephone, Why not 3M 4200 instead ? Think it might be hard to dissassemble if you ever need to ?

Last year I used 3M 4200. So far so good.

Mostly a matter of what was out here in Guam. I used 5200 on my old Cal and was able to remove it after a three year wait. I suppose I'd rather have it be too tenacious than too little and leak?

Hey,

Just for everyone's knowledge. Here are some pics of what can happen with a leaking chainplate. Just purchased the boat 2 months ago and I knew everything needed to be rebedded. Also just had a complete rig survey too for insurance showing nothing wrong. But had my friend moving the boat yesterday and had a chainplate fail on one of the lowers. Luckily nothing else happened as a result.
Enjoy.

Ok Adam, I'm convinced! Talk about the worth of a picture. This just project moved way up the list.

Here, here! I'm rebedding this year. Ours provide quite a flow with every rain.
So what's the process? Do you take the whole thing off the deck and bulkhead? Or just unfasten the deck fitting and slather the 4200 in there?

I just got through rebedding mine. Used 4200. The previous owner said that every year he rebedd while the boat was on the hard and after a week or so in the water he would still get a little leak. I read somewhere recently that rebedding (curing) is best done under load and if you don't do that you risk the seal being broken. So I tried it; rebedd then immediately hooked the stays back, re-tuned and let it cure. So far so good.

I didn't remove the chain plates from the bulkhead. Just removed the deck plate and dug out ALL the old stuff,,, Important to clean all surfaces before applying new sealer. I used a little sand paper to rough up the surface under the deck plate.

I'm sure everyone has their own method
