Advice on New Traveler

I have a Schaefer traveler that has seen better days. I am not sure how it is anchored or what might be the right replacement. I am partial to Garhauer stuff, but might consider something else. How is this done? What are the steps? What are the options for products?

You instincts are good. I replaced my traveler 4 years ago with Garhauser with excellent results.

Bryon,

Did you replace the track as well. I have heard on the grape vine that the screws are a bear to remove.

I just received my new Garhauer MT UB2 travler...What a piece of craftsmanship. I hope to post pictures of the install soon.

I'll put in for another endorsement of the Garhauer unit......Put mine in early last summer and it's been SWEET!!! I think that there is another posting for this somewhere. I also recently switched over to a rigid boom vang and removed my topping lift, so far so good Very Happy

I would do a few things different knowing what I know. But first, Garhauer builds nice stuff, heavy, but built like a tank and reasonablely priced and great to work with.

The new unit is sooo much better than the OEM unit; I can now move the traveler to windward easily. Cheers

However it could be even easier if I had not tried to fit the line to the dodger like I did, too many turns Frustrating

I should have tried to make the height the same as the OEM, thinking it must bolt on like the OEM. Garhauer will build the riser however ever you want, I thought I would try to have it sit like the OEM, well I shouldn?t have, I should have had the risers built and inch or two higher. I ended up making some blocks for it to sit on, and although it covers the area where the old unit bolted through, I would have preferred to not have had to make those blocks.

All in all though it works wonderfully, just could be better with some more thought I guess, if you plan to do this send me a PM and I could explain myself better Rolling Eyes

These are both Garhauer but amazingly different designs. The one on Tortuga's Lie has double blocks all around (best purchase) and standard risers, no special line path. T37chef's is single/double blocks, an exotic riser (allowing the unit to rotate up?) and a line path on the deck. Is there a significant reason you two choose the models you did?

I would add, that the design "improvement" according to the guys at Garhauer was because the old design would jam the line?
