Two questions:
1. What size primary winches does your boat have? Our very old Lewmar 44's have worn-out self tailers, are difficult to take apart (they need to be un-bedded and removed completely for servicing), and never stop squeaking and creaking. So we're thinking about upgrading them.

2. Has anybody installed secondary winches aft of the primaries? What size and where did you put them? I've seen some photos of secondary winches up forward near the dodger (I think zdunc has them there), but our spiffy new dodger doesn't leave much room for that option.

We had Lewmar Ocean Series 46ST. They are the original 1984 winches and seemed to be a good size. I am replacing them due to a crack found in the upper line jaw on one of them.
Parts not available, not willing to pay ridiculous prices for others selling them used.
I was going to replace with Lewmar Ocean 48 ST, but have decided to upgrade with Anderson 46 ST winches. The specs rate the gear ratios closer to a Lewmar 48 and 50.
Planning installation this spring. Bought from Binnicle Marine in Halifax, great deal, good company also.
I will try to sell my old Lewmars for a much more reasonable price, maybe someone like me needs parts for theirs.

I added the Anderson 46's a few years ago, great winches and a good size too,

I have the old 2 speed Lewmar 48ST that came with the boat in 1982. I have maintained them well and had them rechromed once. They work well and appear well sized for the boat. I have seen folks with secondary winches and it would be easy to install them. I fly a chute singlehanded and really do not see the point. I am not going to have a jib and chute up at the same time. Maybe if I was a regular racer with a crew I would find them useful.
I have owned my boat for 31 years and cruised it extensively, but have only occasionally raced it.

I put Anderson's on my Bristol 35 Alden years ago. Quality and great prices BUT if you've got anything else for winches on the boat you need different handles for each. The handle insert does not match Lewmar.
