We finally finished the interior. This project took 4 years
Well finished for now, as you all know work on a boat is never done.

We
• replaced the port holes with NFM port holes (6-4x14 and 2-6x15)
• re-varnished all the teak (removed each piece, sanded and varnished) and cabin sole
• re-upholstered all the cushions (new foam) in a soft faux leather
• replaced the pilot berth with storage cupboards for linens, cans and charts
• Painted the teak along the coach top to lighten the interior
• displayed some of our photos (printed on 1/8” pvc) along the coach top
• installed a removable bulkhead across the quarter berth
• created a computer and reference area near the nav station
• cut out a port side lazerette to access the area where the quarter berth was
• made the main couch into a pull out bed
• rewired all the lights and installed LED lighting

BTW the quilt on the V berth is a traditional African quilt with the words ‘Mother I Love You’ in Swahili. It was given to my wife by our daughter who volunteered as a nurse in Tanzania

Wow! That looks great and has really given me some ideas for a few more projects. Snicker How expensive was the reupholstering and how did you decide on the fabric? Congrats on completing a nice looking project!

We have a Sailrite and did it ourselves (we have no previous experience). Measuring was the most difficult and we measured 6 times and cut once. The material (Majestic) is very similar to that used on some boats we saw at the Boat Show. The people at Sailrite helped us select the fabric and breathable bottom. It must be breathable or we would have ballons for cushions. Very Happy

The cushions were sized so we could use the back from the port side on the pullout bed and have only 2 cushions on the bottom.

Note the bottoms have no buttons because they would rust if they got wet. Water would sit in the depressions. We were unable to source stainless or brass button blanks.

Wow! Modifications look great and you guys really did a great job on the upholstery. We (by "we" I mean my wife) did ours a couple years ago and it was a real learning experience. To partially answer T397's question as to cost, my wife found fabric that was so inexpensive that it's not worth mentioning but the foam was almost $2K. We are lucky to have Bob's Foam Factory near our house and they cut all of the foam on a giant bandsaw using the original cushions as patterns. The cutting was included in the price. The cheapest quote from a local upholstery shop was around $4K for the whole job. The highest was $10K (she's very proud of her work). The price structure where you live may vary but the foam is going to be the biggest expense. We are in San Francisco.

I found a cheap memory foam mattress and cut it with an electric knife. The electric knife worked fine, but not as good as a foam shop would use. It was hard to get the angle next to the hull perfect, and the cuts were a little wavy. I have a Sailrite to do the upholstery with but haven't tackled that yet. After I finished cutting the foam with the electric knife I experimented with a hot knife I made from a wire recycled from an old hair dryer, hooked it up to a 12v power supply, and it looked like it might work ok too. Harbor Freight has a cheap hot knife that I would try if I were to do it again. I only replaced the foam in the v-berth but it is very comfortable for us now.

Congratulations! Everything looks great! I would be very interested to see and hear how you did the pull out bed in the salon?

My Port midships berth details

Berth ready for sleep - First photo
The Port berth required that I remove both pieces of teak on the front of the seat. these are the pieces that hold the cushions from falling off the bench. The one on the short seat was cut lengthwise 1/2 inch below the top of plywood seat. A half inch square piece of teak was then added to the upper piece and 2 pins added (see photo 2 & 3). This piece is used when it is not a berth (photo 4). The lower piece that remains attached to the bench so that the plyood can rest on it. A piece of teak was added to the bulk head to support the ply at the other end.

The other piece of teak was cut lengthwise at the top level of the top of the plywood seat a piece of 1/2 inch teak added to the top piece. It was then glued to a piece of 1/2 baltic birch plywood that fit the opening in front of the bench (photo 5 & 6). This piece could then sit on top of the bench seating and had 2 pins added to it so it did not slide forward when not a berth. (photo 7 & 8 ). When used as a berth and to strengthen the plywood piece I added a removable 2" angle of aluminium that is attached with machine knobs and t-nuts (photo 9 & 10 next reply as 8 photo limit).

Hope that helps
