Spent the better part of the past months banishing the nasty dark brown Cetol from the teak on SOLARE.
Cockpit seats..done
Cockpit table...done
Toe rail...done
Companion way... in progress
Dorade boxes, hand rails, traveler posts, secondary winch pads, etc... still to go

Here's what they looked like before:

Nice look. That's a lot of work. Did you go to all oil? Cetol has a natural now that looks a bit better. We have Cetol toe rails and oil everything else now.

Solare, Looks great!!! I guess you went with varnish?? Hope it stays good for you. I've noticed that earlier versions of the marine Cetol have a somewhat cloudy appearance. I use the residential version of Cetol which comes in better colors and is not opaque it also lasts for two seasons on the bay and is very easy to re-coat.

Thanks, it was allot of work stripping, sanding and refinishing.

The table is Varnish (6 coats of Epifanes over the PO's varnish) as will be the companion way trim & boards.

The seats & toe rail are the Cetol Natural, 3 coats of the base pigment and 2 top coats of clear gloss. Having varnished toe rails before, and looking at my brothers that is next to me in the yard, it's very hard to tell the difference. The color is spot on, but it doesn't get that same fill that you get with varnish.

Supposedly all you need to do is add one clear coat a year for maintenance of the Cetol.

Cheers,
Glenn Cheers

Just started using the "Natural" based on this list results. So far I am VERY happy. I have used the classic Cetol before and this is a big improvement.

1 seat done.

[b]What product did you use to remove the cetol? My cetol looks pretty good but I am thinking this summer of removing it. What is your new product? I have been using Bristol Finish with some success but am not 100% with it. Whitehawk

Nice Work!

I just did the cockpit seating but went with plain teak oil. It just is not practical to have slippery seats on Lake Superior.

I removed my cetol finish two seasons ago (replaced with new Cetol Natural). I just used a heat gun and a good scraper from Lee Valley Tools. Did not take much to remove. It went so fast my wife held the heat gun and I scraped. We went along at about 1 feet a minute for both sides of the rail.

I just finished all my exterior teak (cockpit seats still to do) with Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss (5 coats) and Epifanes Clear High-Gloss Varnish (2 coats). Previous finish was Cetol, or just teak oil. I can't believe how much better it looks! A real high-gloss wet look finish.

The Epifanes Wood Finish is nice because you don't need to sand between coats if you apply the next coat within 72 hours. However, I wanted as nice a finish as possible, so I followed the process below:

    Strip old finish
Sand to bare wood with 100 grit
    Sand again with 150 grit
Apply 1st coat Epitfanes Wood Finish Gloss (EWFG) thinned 25% with Epifanes Brushing Thinner
    Sand with 250 grit
Apply 2nd coat EWFG thinned 10% with Epifanes Brushing Thinner
    Sand with 350 grit
Apply 3rd, 4th and 5th coat EWFG thinned 10% sanding between coats with a very fine 3m pad
Apply Apply 6th and 7th coat Epifanes Clear Gloss varnish thinned 10% sanding between coats with a very fine 3m pad
