Not sure if it's still on top but Chicago once held the world record for slips/mooring per capita. Easy to belive when you approach the city. We had to dodge 4 separate races going on while we approached.

We stayed in Du Sable harbor where half the boats (sail and power) fly "Don't Give up the Ship!" flags. Apparently the Chicago Olympic plans include ripping out the entire waterfront from Monroe to the Navy Pier. This would include moving Columbia Yacht Club and putting abridge over Burnham Harbor in order to make sailing and rowing venues. Needless to say the boaters that would be displaced for up to 4 yrs are up in arms.
