Betty Lou's teak cockpit grates needed some love. The P.O. had finished them with Cetol, which never matched the Epifanes varnish on the toe rails and other brightwork. The starboard grate also had two broken slats from being stepped on in the wrong place over 30+ years. Here's the results of a chemical strip, slat replacement and 7 coats of Epifanes gloss.

Looks Great!
Can you please provide a brief step by step on the project?
Thanks in advance.

Brief step-by-step:

1. Give seats to Bernie, my favorite shipwright. He works cheap and does amazing work.
2. Wait
3. Pick up seats and pay Bernie

But seriously, the seats were covered by the PO with Cetol, and one slat on the starboard side was broken through on two places from being stepped on between the underlying supports.

Bernie did a chemical strip to get the Cetol off, then sanded down to 600 grit. He ordered a new teak strip from a local specialty wood vendor, removed the broken strip and replaced it with the new, countersinking and plugging the screw holes to match.

He then put on 4 coats of Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss, using a 3M pad between each coat, the added 3 coats of Epifanes Gloss Clear, wet sanding between coats with 600 grit.

If I point out the new slat, you can see a slight difference between the wood, but otherwise they look amazing. I will now store the seat grates below when not in use to extend the finish…

Thanks for the response.
I do have a few questions..
1.) What grit of 3M sanding pad did you use?
2.) Did you thin your varnish? If so how much?
3.) How long did you wait between coats?

Thanks in advance.

Also...

Any idea what the maintenance will be? I'm thinking that should be pretty sturdy for quite some time without any work or touch up. Did your guy give you a guess as to how long it will look that gorgeous?

We use Scotch Bright Grey Ultra Fine #07448 pads between coats, which are equivalent to 00 steel wool. Box of 20 for $23.33 @ Amazon.com

Epifanes has it's own Brush Thinner for their varnish, and we use it. We thin up to 50% for the first coat, then cut back for each successive coat, i.e., 25%, 10%, 5%, and only do the final coat un-thinned. That initial very thin "sealer coat" will penetrate better and give good grip for the next coat.

We wait at least 24 hours between coats, given good varnishing weather.

BTW, I treat my toe rails and other brightwork the same way, and refinish them every year, sanding all the way down to the wood any areas where the varnish has failed.

The key to long life in varnished brightwork is protecting it from the sun, salt and weather. By bringing the seat grates inside when not using the boat, we should get several years out of the finish. I'd really like to have canvas covers for my toe rails to extend their finish, but haven't figured out a good design yet.

They look great, but are they functional? I don't mean to be one who has any room to criticize, but...why would you want the teak cockpit seats to be varnished = slippery no?

I use Semco teak sealer which keeps the natural teak non slip unless you sand it like crazy. Its not glossy but thats fine by me, not the table, boards and wheel I use Epifanes

Maybe it's because my butt has enough surface area to overcome the slipperiness, but I've never slipped off the seats.

We usually have cushions over the teak but sometimes the cushions will slide out from under us.....gotta get some snaps!
