On our boat the teak covering the starboard lazerette hatch is hinged. I open the lazerette by grabbing the latch. We remove the seats when we aren't using the boat. The hinge pins have a length of string attached and are easily removed by pulling the string.

Same here. Hinged STBD locker and the rest stay in place with small guide blocks screwed into the seats. Thus I never imagined removing them because the blocks would have to go and we'd have screw holes. Only issue I have with them is the Lazarette. The curved aft helmsman seat means that you can't open the laz all the way. So it has to be set aside if anything big is coming out.

The teak duck boards covering my stern lazarette is in three sections with the middle one hinged so you can open the locker without removing the boards. I think this is retro from a previous owner because all of the wood grain matches perfectly from section to section as if it was in one piece then cut into the three sections. They must have added additional teak cleats to the underside to resecure the slats once cut. This arrangement works well for us and I have never had an issue with them.

I have never considered eliminating our teak slat seat covers because they are part of the "look" of gracious elegance that goes with a classic Tartan 37. Granted our hull is #16 from 1976 and so I can more easily arrive at this standpoint, but to me they reflect the same polish as leather seats in an old Austin Healy.
