Hi ... I'm a brand new owner of a Tartan 37 (1982 C/B)... sailing out of Sausalito, Calif.

quick question: my emergency tiller seems to be from some other boat. Does anyone have a photo of what the emergency tiller looks like? (in case I have to have one hand-made by a metalsmith).

Or better yet ... does anyone know where I can buy an ET for a 82 Tartan 37?

Thanks for any help ?

David Collins

I have an 82 T37 and I believe the original emergency tiller. It is simply a piece of galvanized pipe about 2 feet long that fits into the top of the fitting on the rudder post. If it is missing, you can get a replacement at Home Depot. Not sure how you would get leverage in a seaway, but it is there.

David,

My ET is just a piece of pipe. However, one end has had its outer dimension reduced so that it will fit into the rudder head. I think it was just ground down. Anyway, it only goes into the rudder head one way.

Mine has a heavy duty sack on it and I have it stowed so that I just need to peel the sack back a bit and slide the ET into the rudder. Without a sack, I would wrap the part you hold with a line for better grip and to remind you which end goes where.

Maybe mine is different, the red piece drops into the top of the rudder post,[it normally lives there] and a aluminium tube fits in the top, just short enough to clear the wheel. Enjoy your new boat, and on the topic of steering, check the axles in the sheaves at the bottom of the binnacle. Regards, Bruce.
