"Kristina" (previously "Affinity") went across the pond in 2012 as part of the BOR, continued east and has been doing a 'Grand Tour' of the Med. Currently on the hard in Messolonghi, Greece after a challenging summer in the Aegean. Plans for 2016 are to sail across the Med in leisurely legs then join the ARC + to return to the Americas. You can follow us on our Blog http://www.susanandjim.com

Interested in what worked for us and what didn't? Want to know how we prepared Kristina for the voyage? Want to join the crew on our return trip? Please let us know.

Update - After 5 years and approximately 20,000 nm
"Kristina" returned home safely in Spring 2017. Now in Rock Hall for a refit. Thanks to the dozens of generous fellow sailors who made the dream happen! Cheers

Welcome home. That's a pretty awesome track worthy of a framed world map and a brass plaque!

Amazing Trip, my hats off to you ! You have done what most only dream about. Just curious, is your Tartan cutter rigged ? I looked at your Safety Schematic and you showed having a Gale Sail...did you use it ?

“Kristina” is sloop rigged. The Gale sail clips around the furled jib with fabric. No need to remove the jib. It’s time consuming and something you want to practice. We never used it but shortened sail by furling instead. This got us into trouble one time when, after sailing all day, the furling line chaffed and parted. We had 42 knots and sud only a full jib out. After 45 minutes of fighting I got it lowered . I was met at the shore by a sail maker who had been watching and figured correctly that we’d need his services.

In hind sight, we could have avoided the incident with the Gale sail. But things were going good with 28 to 30 kts. The 40 knot winds surprised us as we approached the harbor on the lea side of the island. They call it an adiabatic wind that accelerates as it crosses over the mountain and down the slope . We learned some lessons that day. Being more conservative and using the storm sail would have been good, but locally generated winds without sufficient local knowledge make it tough to plan ahead. That day tested us. I would say it would have been good for my wife and I to have practiced dropping the jib while running down wind. It is a maneuver one doesn’t usually do when You have a roller furler. But when the furling line breaks in a gale, you will wish you had practiced more.

NEVER click on clickbait links. This one now goes to a foreign porn site that could probably destroy your computer. No to the .pdf as well.
