Well, I used the beautiful weather here on the Columbia River this weekend to get started on replacing Betty Lou's port lights with the Newfound Metals ports. The 8 4x14 port light were delivered just before Christmas, and are certainly impressive. They will be a massive improvement over the OEM plastic ports.

It took my shipwright Bernie and I all of Saturday to remove the old ports. They were bedded in silicone, and it is really difficult to break them free of the teak veneer without damage to the veneer. All in all, it's a bit disconcerting to see that the cabin sides are so thin, with the veneer just glued to the glass. Where we did delaminate the veneer, we glued and clamped overnight.

Sunday was spent cleaning up the old silicone bedding and enlarging the holes in the cabin sides to fit the new port lights. I used a laminate trimmer with a flush-cut router bit, with the NFM template clamped to the inside. The combo of the NFM template and laminate trimmer made the job pretty easy, but we spent a lot of time figuring out the correct positioning.

Today we are enlarging the drilled holes for the fasteners from 3/8" to 5/8" to accommodate the outside trim ring, compounding the cabin top, and cleaning up the mess inside the boat. Then maybe we can get some actual installation done.

Here's a couple pics from Saturday. Right-coasters, note the sunny warm weather we were enjoying!

Betty Lou is going to look great this season! Good job. Do you have to add a trim ring on the inside or build out the cabin thickness with the NFM ports?
When I did mine, it made such a huge difference in her appearance that she looked like a new boat...... Cheers

While not a T-37 we did the same on our CS-36T.. I wrote it all up with plenty of details and instructions..

Installing Newfound Metals Port Lights:

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/nfm_port_lights

Ours are now 7 years old and look and perform like they were a week old.

TIP: Treat the gaskets REGULARLY with 303 Aerospace Protectant (blue label) and this will prevent sticking and have them as pliable as new for the life of the boat... I treat ours bi-weekly in-season and it takes all of 1.5 minutes for all eight.....

Here are some photos of the final results of my install of NewFound Metals port lights on Betty Lou. It took two of us the better part of a week to do the job, including the removal of the old ports, cleanup and compounding the cabin sides, and installing the new ports. I'm really pleased with the results.

Hi,

NFM ports ain't cheep, but the quality is unbeatable. They have great pricing info on their website, but I used 8 of the 4 x 14 port lights at $269.95 each, 8 teak spacers at $44.95, 4 x 14 template rental at $20.00, 6 rolls of butyl rubber at $16.95 each, plus fasteners. I also had my shipwright Bernie help with the installation, so add in a week of labor at $100/day.

All in,that adds up to $2640 in parts and about $700.00 in labor, just under $3500.00 total.

NFM website
