Hello all;
I'm thinking about adding solar panels on Nemea for extended cruising in few years and last fall I saw at Annapolis Boat show theese new lightweight and very flexible solar panels made by Solbian and imported by Bruce Shwab in North America. They are more expensive than rigid ones but amost a tenth of weight and their performance is supposedly equal to rigid ones (Like Kyocera or Sunforce).

You can see theese here : http://www.bruceschwab.com/solar-power-solutions/

Anybody have some experience using Solbian panels ? My concern is durability since they are a laminated plastic sandwich and we all know how UV degrades plastics...

I would install panels on bimini top and aft on my dinghy davits; about 300W would cover my needs.

Thanks for your comments !!!

Jean-Denis

I just got rid of my soft panels for two reasons. First: one of them was an old style thicker and heavier panel and the other was a lighter and curly panel. Second: I bought a new bimini and when we removed the solar panels you could see the wear they had put on the bimini. No wonder the waterproofing had failed. I got two 95W panels to mount rigidly above my bimini and a Morningstar Sunsaver Duo controller with remote display. I got all of this from www.wholesalesolar.com . The Morningstar takes a single feed from the panels and keeps both batteries charged. The hardest thing to find was the mounting clips for the rails over the bimini. I finally found them at www.emarineinc.com . Product was http://www.emarineinc.com/products/1%22 ... ir%29.html . We bought 4 pair for two panels. The 190 watts of power keeps us mostly supplied. But we haven't yet sailed a long time without cranking the engine at least twice a day while anchoring or just getting underway. Too many electric toys. VHF, stereo, autopilot, GPS, laptop, refrigerator, nav lights and radar can create a sizable drain on the system. The cabin lights are LED but I haven't switched out the nav lights yet. Hope this helps.

Hi SV NEMA, I dont know how to post the link !!!! but, if you go to sailboat owners.com and go to the 'musings with mainsail' section, you will find a article 'installing a solbian solar panel' I think you will find this usefull, Mainsail does very good articles with excellent photos and is a skilled electrician. Regards Bruce.

The link to MaineSail's website is:
http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising

He details many repairs and upgrades and is a valuable source for Butyl tape, used for bedding deck hardware.
