We've purchased a Garmin 700 series with radar. We are leaning toward a pole mount off the stern instead of a mast mount. Does anyone have input on a stern mount radar; height, base mounting points, etc. We already have a Garhauer lifting davit and there is an option to combine both radar & davit crane on one.

Thanks for any input.

Steve,
I installed Garhauer's 2 1/2 daim pole on the stern, offset a couple feet to stbd. I sat it on top of the teak cap rail. You just have to locate the plate such that you don't drill into any existing screws in the teak. Mine has the pivoting base and adjustable rod allowing me to tilt the radar pt or stbd depending on which tack I'm on. I also used their standoffs to brace to the stern rail and deck.
It's solid, well designed and I've had no problem with it.

You are on the right track here. You want it over your head as you stand on deck (microwaves are not particularly good for your eyes over time according to what I have read) but as low as possible to see close it as this is much more important than getting the slightly longer range from higher up. I have mine on a dedicated pole at the place you are planning. I think it would work on the backstay as well but I have no experience with that. I have done deliveries with boats (admittedly larger than T37) where the mast mount was not appreciated---definition of close in objects in heavy fog (buoys other boats) was not as well-defined and, of course==even with a guard) it was another snag for halyards and tacking the genny. Don't cut the cable during the installation. If you need to take it down for seasonal storage, best bet is to disconnect inside the radome and store it separately.

When I bought VANORA (#198), the previous owner had purchased a Questus gimballed mount that goes around the back stay. I have a Raymarine dome mounted on the gimballed platform. No significant additional windage and it appears to be a good, functioning height. So far it has worked well without further cluttering up the stern (as I have davits and solar panels back there). If you should wish some photos, zap me a note and I can send them to you. It was a simple install and is very sturdy.....four years into the life of the mount and all is good.

Please do post the photos so we can all see them. I have been looking at installing radar in the near future.
