I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'll bet there is variability in the installations of thru-hulls over the years. My raw water hose is clearly marked 5/8", and the barrel on the sink drain is clearly marked 1 3/4". None of my thru hulls were put anywhere that makes it "easy" to replace with backed valves.

I agree that folks have probably changed the size of the through hull fittings. I changed my engine intake to a larger one (I think I went to 1") because Yanmar specified it. And I did the same with the head sink when I replaced it. You can use different nipples to fit hoses, but I think it is nice to have more ability to bring flow in and out. I am not sure why Tartan used such dinky apertures. FWIW, I had a pinhole leak in my sink drain that was driving me crazy for years. Dripped about a cup every 2 days. Mine were flush mounted on the outside and a bitch to remove. I have pictures and had always intended to post something about the project in the technical part of this website. I have some disagreement with Compass Marine on this process. I do not like all the bolts going through the hull when we have the great adhesives we have and when you use composite backing plates. You needed the bolts back in the days of wooden boats and pine tar sealants.
