While brainstorming storage ideas for our upcoming cruise, the Admiral and I decided to pull the cushion out of the berth and install some cross bracing instead. Like others, our pilot berth is a storage area. The bracing will be interlocking 1/2" boards (think tic tac toe) that can be taken apart when not in use and laid flat on the berth.

However, we are 714 miles (per the great god google) from the boat and I need to know how wide to make the thwartship boards. And I might as well ask for the fore/aft measurement up to the foot hole but not into the foot hole.

Anyone? Bow Bow Bow

Well, it involved MATH but I think I have the answer. I took the picture from the Tartan brochure and printed it out in landscape mode. Hoping that the engineering department gave the marketing department an accurate drawing of the interior of the boat, I measured from stem to stern and used 37'2" as the overall length. Once I had the ratio calculated, I measured the pilot berth length and found it to be 6'. This was close enough due to low resolution of the picture and lower resolution of my old eyes. Very Happy

Well, anyway. I figured the width at the shoulder area as ~27" and mid-thigh area as ~22". The length of the opening is ~59". So now I have a place to start with designing the storage the Admiral wants. Cheers

Wayne, your math is pretty good. I measured 58" fore to aft, not counting the foot well. Forward end is about 22" wide. Aft end is 31"

So we had two 8 foot long by 6 inch planks at the house. I cut them here at the boat with notches so that they would interlock and hold themselves vertical. Not show on the foot hose end was a wood cap with three screws in it to hold it to the long fore and aft pieces. Used a piece of 1/2 inch foam insulation for a lid.

Lots of dry storage. The planks can be collapsed when we are done with them.
