Another owner asked me about the placement of our windlass on one of the YouTube videos. Here is a pic sailingsoulianis. Others can maybe share pics as well.

@zdunc thanks for sharing! We ended up going with a Lofrans royal manual windlass. Hope you're out of the way of Irma.

So what has been your experience with that Lewmar thus far? The reviews are all over the place, but that's the one I was going to grab. What is the rating on that one?

With a 35 lb anchor you can have about 185 feet ACCO chain and be at the spec. Can't remember those weights, but that's what I bought.

As far as performance, it works fine. We have the remote so can raise from the bow while watching. Also, a connected switch in the cockpit, but we never use it.

The windlass jams every once in a while, but it's easy to unjam with a winch handle. The jamming is usually caused by twist in the chain. So, a swivel could fix. We just bought a mantus swivel.

We did have to replace the motor once (some gears stripped) but this windlass is from a previous owner so no idea of age. Maybe 8 years.

I'm sure there are better out there, but this one works and it's what came on the boat. Let me know what you end up doing.

PSA:

Please turn off the breaker to your windlass when you are done with it.

A friend of mine dropped anchor, got in his dinghy and visited another boat downwind of his. As he passed his boat going to shore, he saw his anchor breaking the surface and stowing itself in the cradle. Shocked He's not sure what happened because after he reset the breaker everything works normally. But he turns it off everytime he leaves the boat now.

Here's my setup. Lewmar V1. I have a Rocna 20Kg with 200 feet of 5/16" chain with 5/8" 8 plait rode behind that. Twisting chain was a problem occasionally but since adding a swivel the problem has gone away. The windlass has never had any trouble pulling the chain. Sometimes the splice gets sticky going through but with a little care it'll go through.
