Apologies for lack of a photograph: the boat is miles away. The area immediatly surrounding the mast step is open in my boat, exposing the aluminum mast step and the inside of the hull upon which it's mounted. Is this the way all boats came from the builder? Have any of you clever fellows devised an attractive way to "finish" this something of an eyesore? Thanks

Negative!!! I have a lovely piece of wood surrounding my mast step. It was notched to slide past the mast partner. The old teak and holly board was basically trashed so we replaced it. WE had to rebuild the support under the deck boards, also.

Then the Admiral wrapped the mast with a black polyethylene rope to prevent brushing up against a cold mast at night. We used black to hide sunscreen and body oils. Very Happy

I'm not at the boat so no pictures here either, but the previous owner of Holiday redid the floors and they are beautiful. That area around the mast, he took teak and holly like the rest of the floor and made 4 custom pieces that have notches cut out for all the surrounding extrusions. Will get a picture next time I'm down.

Here are the pics. It's actually only 3 pieces. 2 I pulled out and took a pic. The third is the smaller piece in the picture with it in place by the mast.

That looks so sweet. I was planning to redo my floor, might add that to the list.
