I am looking at installing Davits. I could not find any at a reasonable price but suddenly have two sets and now I am having trouble deciding which ones to use. One set is custom made of 316 SS tubing by a teacher students as a class project (FYI - they do not know me or my boat). The other set is Atkins & Hoyle cast set (really nice but different concept). The main difference is that the custom made ones lift the dinghy & motor (150lbs) 28" over the deck height and the A&H lift it only 18" above deck height. This is the clearance to the top of the dinghy. I have tried to illustrate the two on the attached.
We are thinking of going south from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean in 2 years.

The Stainless Set has a smaller base (3"x5") and uses the rail for an upper brace. They are fairly well made but welds are rough

The Atkins & Hoyle set do not use the rail for their strength and have built in sheaves. They have a substantial base of about (6"x9").

I favour the A&H but wonder if the lift is not enough as the bottom of the dinghy will be at deck level but on the plus side this offers a lower centre of gravity. Can those experienced with davits weigh in?

I also wonder what reinforcement you added to the transom as it is certainly not strong enough to hold either set without it.

Thanks

I do not intend to use the davits if offshore and would put it on the foredeck as we do now while making passage up Lake Huron. I would also probably use the davits when motoring inside the ICW.

My boat has the Kato Marine davits, the pushpit is reinforced with flat ss straps, supplied by Kato I believe. They are fairly comfortable to lean against and add a lot of strength.

Actually, that's an old photo, I had stainless uprights welded to the davits and with crossbars, now have 2 135w solar panels on top. The extra flat straps make it all fairly rugged. [pic taken during a squall that flipped my hard dingy!]

Did you have to reinforce the transom? The glass on my boat seems really thin and would seem to bend with little pressure.

I tackled the 'rail support' issue by welding an addition to the upper rail of the pushpit forward to the next stanchion. So I have a solid upper rail to just about as far forward as the companionway. It is also useful for the BBQ as the stern was becoming to full of outboards, life rings etc.

The bases of my davits are each bolted through a stainless plate[approx 3x4] which is bolted on top of the stern teak trim, the bolts go through the teak and the hull/deck joint flange.

I have a Garhauer 1 1/4"davit system, which I installed 2 years ago. To answer your major question, I'd install your stainless steel version. In my opinion, you'll find the higher the dinghy the better, within reason. If it's high, like mine, and you keep your outboard mounted on the dinghy, it's very unlikely that the engine will touch the water when on a hard tack with the rail in the water. Also, I have a 10 ft inflatable with a heavy plywood floor and a 9.9hp outboard. The outboard end is quite heavy and the higher the line to lift it the better; you'll be able to put some of your weight into it while pulling.

I originally installed the davit system without any bracing on the stern rail. It worked ok, but I wasn't happy with the stern rail flex when I hoisted the dinghy and in rough seas. Garhauer provided some additional bracing, which were designed to attach to the stern rail and brace down to the transom. The angle is too acute to provide any real bracing, so I didn't install them. However, I was able to modify those braces to attach directly to the vertical section of the davit and brace it forward just outside the coaming and inside the toe rail. Now, it's rock solid. I've attached some pictures of my installation that may be useful.

Here are pictures of our 10 foot (10'8") Portabote we just got on our davits. We've only had the Tartan 2 years, and we just bought the Portabote. So, this is the first time we have used the davits, and I don't know much about them. They seem pretty flimsy but firm up well under load and with ratchet straps holding the dingy from lateral movement. Since I wouldn't plan on open water or rough seas while using the davits, I'm just going to go with it for now. If I see anything that concerns me, I may add SS straps from the davit down to the back of the helm seat like I have seen. I also just constructed that outboard plate out of star board and installed (check out my 1968 Evinrude that runs perfectly!).

On a side note, the Portabote looks huge, and I didn't think it would fit well upside down on the fore peak, but I just tried it this past weekend, and it fits great. Plenty of room to walk around either side and nowhere close to the windlass with the butt off the bote against the mast. I'm imagining it will end up there a lot during transiting and on the davits only for short trips and at anchor.

This is off topic, but here is what the 10' portabote looks like on the fore deck.
