Puffcard, why did you use a plate instead or right to the quadrant?

The pin was getting very close to the edge where the cable grove is and a light spot. You'll see from underneath, the quadrant has some spots that have much less material and that's where my pin attached. Just felt it would distribute the load better with a plate. No engineering calculations, saw the plate and say that looks like it will work.

I just mounted my Raymarine Type 1 linear drive with Edson Tiller arm. It was fairly easy to do since I used the shelf in the aft settee to mount the drive; with barely enough space for the required 90 degree angle. The corner of the shelf will be beefed up to take the load but the shelf is pretty solid to start with. I'll need to raise the aft settee storage floor but that shouldn't be a problem after I get done so I can use it for storage again. See pic

Edson Tiller arm..... Edson drilled the hole in the aft end of the arm. I also added a key slot just in case I wanted to use the key in the rudder post with a smaller linear arm in the future.. I had a machine shop tap/drill a hole for the Edson bolt that was supplied that goes through the rudder post. The machine shop also drilled the outer hole where the linear arm connects. [b]See PDF

Special note: the bolt that goes through the rudder post had threads added so it would go completely through the rudder post and out the other side to accept a nut. The machine shop did this.

Edson Tiller arm cost (model 926-10-610-MKII Bore- 2.875 Key .24) - $461, machine shop cost $90. Raymarine autopilot EV-200 T70158 Type 1 drive cost - $2742 plus tax (from my local Marine store), Clipper Instrument Pod f/2 Clipper Instruments CLZ-POD $62, fitting were less than $25 total.

By the way, I did save my storage area. Just raised the boards a few inches so they wouldn't hit the linear drive/tiller arm.

File comment: Six10 in a tube from West Marine. To start off.... buying this product made the job A LOT easier. Great stuff. I mixed epoxy in the past but will never do it again unless I have really large fiberglass projects.

File comment: I purchased the Clipper Instrument Pod f/2 Clipper Instruments CLZ-POD for $62 and modified it to accept Raymarine control heads. A far cry from the price of NAVPODs. I kept my wheel pilot as a backup. Pictured here with my new e7d display above. It networks with the new autopilot control head with a simple spur cable.

File comment: Here's the finished project. Notice where I mounted the linear drive; on the shelf and in the far corner. I epoxied 2x4s under the shelf to beef it up and to attach/mount the rudder sensor shelf.

File comment: This picture explains what Edson supplied and what I had done at the machine shop. BUY A REALLY GOOD BIT to drill through the tiller post.

File comment: Here is the finished tiller arm install. I took out the emergency tiller post pole when I was drilling the new holes then just used the existing holes in the emergency tiller post when I put it back together.

File comment: I used the back side of the Edson tiller arm as a drill bit guide. There's probably other drill bit guides to use but this is how I did it. That tiller post is HARD. I went through two drill bits.

Mike -- Very nice job on the installation, and great pictures. Noticed you installed the rudder sensor. I am reading different things about whether or not that is needed with the new ev200's. Was it part of the package when you bought it?

Yes,,, part of the package. I imagine it would work without it but I wouldn't want to. If it got confused it might bind all the way over port or starboard.

By the way I love this autopilot,,,,, quiet and smooth.... some times I forget it's on

Nice job Mike.

Talking to Raymarine, the newer version requires the rudder sensor, the older one didn't.

Mike,

Noticed that the bore for your tiller arm was 2.875. Do you, or anyone else know, if that is the standard size for the rudder post? I am living in Maine and the boat is in Maryland and I'd like to get as much stuff ordered before I head down to get her.
