Needing advice on an Electronics package for a Tartan 38, 1978 model.
I would like to keep my present B&G autopilot, it seems to be doing a good job.
My radar and chart plotter are black and white.
I have been looking a little bit at Zeus2 and 4 G radar.
My primary concern though is not racing but safety.
I'm a new sailor and wanted to be able to overlay radar over the chart.
I'll be mainly coastal cruising around Southern and Central California.
Any help would be appreciated!

I just purchased the Raymarine e7d with 18" scanner; comes as a package and love it. I was able to interface my Standard Horizon GX2150/AIS ready/VHF radio to the e7d and now have AIS showing up also. What I liked about the e7d is that it has touch screen and manual control AND is WIFI ready meaning IPADs and Androids can interface with it. I looked at the new Garmin touchscreen but it had no manual control, just touch screen and I've had problems with them on other boats especially in the rain.
This system is stand alone so I didn't need to purchase the networking backbone. Did I mention it also is depth transponder ready and is capable to display video if you want to hook up a video camera. Raymarine products have been problems on other boats that I have been on but when I went to play with the e7d at my local marine store I couldn't resist purchasing the package.

Thanks for your quick reply!
Interesting I have a similar radio but I think mine is a little older, GX 2100, that I was planning on putting into this boat. Do you mind me asking what your new electronics cost you including installation?
Where did you install your chart plotter?

I got a package deal from mjmarine for $2160 which includes shipping. I did the install myself. My old radar was Furuno which I de-installed and sold on ebay two days after I listed it. I had to purchase a new pedestal support railing (58") from Defender.com to mount it on the railing and give it some distance from the compass.

This is the guide I used; saved a lot of money. Simple design and looks good:

Wow!
That looks really nice and very reasonable,
I am going to show that to a friend who is helping me out on this boat.
Thanks!

After a lightening strike in 2013 we had the opportunity to refit totally. We originally had Raymarine but the wife got lost navigating the screens and she used to right computer manuals. Went to the boat show and spent one hour with each of 5 manufacturers. We choose Garmin - easy to use and uses industry standard NEMA 2000 which makes it so easy to set up and link to other companies products. Very Very Happy we did it. Not cheap - $12,000 Canadian but we needed everything.

What Garmin MFD(chart plotter)and radar did you go with?
Where did you mount your MFD?

I purchased the 8208 and mounted it in a pod on the Pedestal Guard. Since I was able to replace it all (remember lightening strike - insurance claim) i also added a below deck autopilot (GHP12) Garmin wind, depth and speed instruments, Standard Horizon with AIS and net-workable, wifi and a new radio antenna.
