We almost exclusively use our metal & wood boarding ladder at the starboard side gate. It's too much of a hassle to mount it on the transom with the Lifesling, propane tanks, and dinghy hanging in the davits. So that means when the dinghy comes on or off the davits, we have to climb up the transom with only the downward-sloping exhaust pipe as a foothold.
So while we were in the boatyard for a bottom job last month we added a transom step. It's a foam core (sytrafoam insulation from Home Depot) glassed to the transom with Soft Sand non-skid. We repainted the entire transom with Alexseal.
