Hi all, we are leaning towards replacing our electric head with a composting toilet this off-season. Has anyone tried fitting/installing the Airhead toilet? I have a feeling I'll need to make a little ledge or step of some sort so we have somewhere for our feet.

We're looking to really lengthen our time off grid. Living pump out to pump out just isn't cutting it anymore. Plus the extra storage after removing the holding tank will be awesome, not to mention the simplicity of a composting toilet

Looking at doing the same myself. Tired of one head problem after another and the tiny holding tank is icing on the cake. Actually looking at the Ogo Origin or the CompoCloset because they are the smallest I can find. Seems C-head went out of business.

Sailing Soulianis installed a C-head on their 37 - needed to put a piece of starboard or something like that to support the unit. Check out their YouTube videos.

Good Luck!

I'll have to look into those two, I hadn't come across those yet. We're considering an AirHead but I haven't mocked it up yet to see if it'll actually fit

We actually rewatched their videos to get some ideas!

Sailing Dream -

How did you vent your airhead - I can see the vent hose going up the bulkhead. Did you cut a new hole and install a mushroom? Something else?

Appreciate the help!

Steve, we ended up going with an Airhead and it's been great so far. Instead of cutting any new holes in the boat, I reused the old holding tank vent outlet and plumbed in the vent from the Airhead to that. I had to use a reducer of sorts to go from the 2"(?) vent hose to the 1/2" outlet. I could see this potentially killing the vent fan in the future but we'll carry a spare, time will tell!

GreatEscape -

Thanks - I was thinking of doing the same thing and now I will. Agree carrying a spare fan is a good idea.

Did you put any kind of loop in the hose to prevent any water from coming in when heeled over? And where did you put the fan - in the hanging locker close to the vent or further away?

Appreciate learning from your experience here.

Steve,

We mounted the fan on the forward bulkhead in the head, under the sink and used the old hole where the main black water hose ran. It's kinda hard to describe... But the fan is mounted in its housing under the sink, then there's another housing (with no fan) mounted in the other side of the bulkhead in the hanging locker. This lets you hookup the vent hose to run to the vent.

For now I just cut a couple of small drain holes in the lowest point of the vent hose to drain any water that might get in. I haven't tested it in any real seaway yet to see how much water gets in but I'm definitely open to ideas, there's got to be a better solution there!
