Following up from another thread, I've completed the install of my Raymarine Evolution Autopilot installation. I've reused the beautiful Edson gearing that came with the original Sharp Seapilot (circa 1980) but I decided to go with a new RM Type 1 Rotary Drive unit rather than figure out if my Sharp rotary drive could be made to work (I still think it could). The difficulties I faced were mainly in how to mount the new rotary drive. I had to modify the mounting bracket to place the drive in a position so that it would fit on the aluminum cross beam but also allow clearance for the emergency tiller. I also had to machine the original sprocket to fit the new drive shaft. The end result is truly a fantastic capability added to the boat. The AP drove flawlessly in the Chesapeake yesterday morning during a 20+ knot northerly while on a broad reach. Quartering seas are among the most challenging condition and in Performance mode, the AP was perfect. I've also added a remote control. I am very satisfied with the performance so far. It's like having an exceptional helmsman at your disposal at any time.
