I have had a new cable for many years in my locker without installing it. I keep my present one oiled and in sheaves and the surveyor says it looks OK though it has some tiny meat hooks in it. The guys at the boatyard say leave it alone as all of them have little meathooks right after they are installed. I am thinking that maybe I should take the plunge and change the cable after 30 years. Any advice on the project from someone who has done this??

Ray,
If you're worried about it, go ahead and replace it. It's a little tedious but not too bad of a job and it's always good practice to know how things are put together on your boat just in case you need to do a field repair. There's a previous discussion about this:

Ray-

I've had my steering apart a couple times over the past few years to replace my pintle and powder coat the pedestal. I never noticed any meat hooks, but can't say that I really looked for them either. If you have the cable, we may want to consider replacing it for the peace of mind. It's always a nice touch to be able to steer the boat. As mentioned above, it's not really hard. Just be careful to get the correct half twist over the steering shaft. If not correct, the steering action will be backwards. It's easy to do, and I did it!!!! Fortunately I tested it.

did this recently, pretty straight forward. You do need to cross them in the pedestal. I made my own, reusing the chain, just put new cable on it. I purchased new eye bolts from Edson.

Thanks, folks. I did it many years ago when I first got the boat and it didn't need to be done. I seem to recall it took some finicky adjustments, but was not a nightmare. I just do not want a failure. Planning a long trip to Nova Scotia this next year.
