My pintle has a slight bend downward. It looks ok, a bit pitted. There is a bit of pitting on the 1"pin the bushing fits on tho. So I took it to Kastel Brothers in St. Michael's (they do shafts, props, cutlass bearings...). Barney thinks the bar is fine, not many problems with those. But the pins always corrode he said, doesn't matter if it's 316 or not. So he recommends a new pin out of shaft stock, un-corrodible he says. And also recommends we weld additional bar along the bottom on both sides to make a channel. So add 1/2" x 1"x 15" on the underside of the pintle at 90 degrees from each edge in. The bold heads will be welded between the side pieces then. The "plug" under the pintle in the rudder will have to be cut to allow for the extra thickness of the re-enforced pintle but that shouldn't be a problem. And under the hull there is plenty of room. So I'm going to do it. He said the bar is fine, no point replacing it, just replacing the bolts and pin. Barney said it's a forever solution....pics when done....and I called S&S, they said Tartan really answers those type questions, but without commitment said it sounded like a good idea.

I've replaced mine twice in twenty years. Let's us know how it turns out. I do know of a Tartan 37 that lost their rudder and went on the beaches of Va Eastern Shore, was a total lost. Something to keep an eye on.

do you have pics of the replaced ones? Was it the 1" pin that corroded most? Scary thought. I'm pleased with this approach, I hope it's ready tomorrow...

I thought that Tartan originally used cut pieces of prop shaft for the pins???

The rudder pintle looked bad, but nothibg like the centerboard pin. There was nothing left of that part, I'll take pics and post. It looked like termites ate it up. I've added a galvanic isolator, seems to be helping.

In regards to the centerboard hinge, I drilled and tapped two holes, one on each side of the bottom plates to accept a zinc, which seems to have abated the corrosion issue a bit. Figured it couldn't hurt. After each haul out, I simply unscrew what's left and screw on a new zinc. These zincs are about 2" long by 3/4" wide by about 1/2" thick, give or take. The rudder pintle is bonded using the grounding wire that runs through our boats.

Just received the quote from Kastel Brothers (St Michael's MD). With new bar and shaft pin $290. That's with the additional gussets welded on the underside. I'll post a pic when done. Very good price. The steel bar was $79 on line, so he's reasonable. So if anyone needs a pintle, I recommend these guys. Mine has the studs in straight line. If your is different send it to him first. He's keeping a template of mine tho, I guessed someone else would want one too...

nice, I had mine refurbed and new 316 bolts welded on this spring, oddly...seems Tartan didn't use 316 on the original. Anyway, good piece of mind isn't it Toast

Looks nice, I like the idea of the reinforcement. I think I'll do something like that, my last one was built to stock design/spec out of 316 (the only SS that should be used for underwater)
