Our boat is a 1978 and the floor needs a little tlc...I have been thinking of cleaning it very good, using a wood stain to even out the color and then varnish it with a satin varnish...Any problem with my idea? Can I varnish over an oil base stain?
thanks

Be very careful and try not to sand the wood as it is a very very thin veneer. I refinished mine 2 years ago and just sanded the finish (not the wood) so as to let the new finish grip to the old.

You may find this hard to believe but i think you will find that gloss is less slippery than satin. I have used both. You can always put a coat of satin over it if you do not like it.
