Baxter - I too am in the process of installing New Found Metal ports on my 1984 Tartan 37. In answer to you question: (1) you do need the spacers; (2) you need to do some measurement. Use a caliper. Measure the total width of the port as current installed. On the outside, measure the distance from the outermost part of the port to the fiberglass side of the boat. Now do that same thing on the inside of the boat, from the innermost part of the port to the panel. Substract the sum of these two latter measurement from the total measurement, and that will give you the measurement you need. You want to do this on a few of the ports, since the measurements may differ. If you google this subject, there are excellent sites that tell you how to do it.
