I'm replacing my hood stowboom system with a standard boom. Is the gooseneck fitting bolted, riveted, or simply screwed into the mast?

I'm thinking I probably want to bolt it in as I'll have a small access hole from removing the cranking mechanism from the stowboom setup but want to see the factory standard attachment. Any close up pics welcomed.

Oh yes, and my hood stowboom system and mainsail is for sale if anyone's interested. I'll let it go for less than the cost of a new main but it's large and bulky and will have to be picked up in NH.

The gooseneck fitting is bolted on both sides using 4 bolts/side.

I just removed mine to install a new Tides Strong Track system. 4 screws per side, not bolts.

I just got back from a ride out to the coast to look at the mast and noted that the 8 original screws are still in place. All I need to do is remove the funky hardware for the stowboom setup.

This is going to be easier than I thought Smile

How do you like the Tides Strong Track system? I just purchased one for my boat.

Jay,
After reading your post, you got my curiousity up as to whether the fasteners are indeed screws or are they bolts?
After a little searching on the net, including an engineering site, the nearest conclusion that I can ascertain is that the definition is somewhat ambiguous. One distinction between a bolt and a screw is that a screw has a more course thread that "cuts" its mating thread into a drilled hole, such as a wood screw or sheet metal screw whereas a bolt has more of a machined thread which goes into a tapped hole or threads into a nut. Still other sites indicate that a bolt needs to be secured with a nut. Some sites indicate that a screw should have a tappered thread so it self tightens as it is screwed in place. Some indicate that the size(diameter) of the fastener is the determining factor.
Again, from what I have seen in the research, is that people use the names almost interchangeably.
Cheers,
Tom

I've always called the ones with the pointy tips, screws and the ones with the flat tips, bolts. So far, no one's corrected me. Chuckle

Correction. Machine screws have flat tips.

Couldn't resist.

I've always assumed screws thread into the material you're fastening weather drilled and tap like a machine screw or just drilled like a wood screw. Then bolts require an additional fastener (a nut). To put a nut on a machine screw is possible, but not the intended use. That seemed to be the consistent use of the terms in the navy.

Of course none of this debates helps anyone get there boom fastened to the mast. Mmm Beer
