I'm having some standing rigging work done and the riggers have decided to pull the mast to do it. When I bought Holiday 2 years ago the previous owner said we were due to change the hose the pennant goes through and haven't done it yet.

My question is, you have to take the boat out of the water to change that hose, right? Or is there some way to do it in the water?

Also, is there anything else that I need to make sure I do while the mast is pulled to allow the maximum time that I would have to do it again?

Thanks for any help! Zach

The pennant hose could conceivably be changed out with the boat in the water, but I can't imagine why one wouldn't wait until a "routine" haulout and do it then. As to mast projects while it's horizontal and on the ground, just envision how much easier it is to do anything in that state vs working 52' feet up. I just had a very pricey "lopolight" tri-colored mast head light fail, a wicked eagle broke my "windex" tell tale and need to unstep the mast to replace them. I'm by myself and figure the ultimate expense of taking the spar down will be justified given the ineffeciency of working from a bosuns' chair. I'll probably install new electric wiring as well and probably a new wind speed/direction system. I've previously installed mast steps, and think it was money well spent.

What I have going on is the riggers working on my standing rigging are renting a crane and pulling the mast anyway. So, I want to get it all done at once. I don't want to have to rent the crane, pull the mast, tune the rigging, etc, twice. If I have them replace the hose while the mast is pulled, I won't have to incur those expenses twice.

So, they can do it even if they leave the boat in the water?

Or, would you definitely recommend hauling out for routine maintenance in conjunction with the rigging work and knock it all out at once?

Also, just wondering if there is anything else I should make sure I get done in conjunction with all this to fore go having to pull the mast again any time soon.

Thanks, Zach

Don't try to replace the centerboard pendant hose while in the water. It's the lowest point on the boat, with a lot of pressure. Wait till you haul. I didn't need to pull the mast to slip on a new hose. The mast pendant down tube comes down and bends aft. With boat hauled loosen hose clamps slip hose towards the mast to get the aft clear so you can see the pendant line. Grab the pendant line and pull it through the gap. Tie a messenger on the tail topside and pull it all the way though. Untie the messenger pull the pendant hose off the mast tube and pull all the pendant through. Cut new hose to fit and push the pendant line through and tie on messager. Lube hose and push up the mast tube far enough that the hose end can be fitted over the centerboard trunk pendant tube and slide the hose back over and tighten clamps.

On my boat, you definitely need the mast pulled to replace the pennant hose in the bilge. I couldn't get to the hose ' s hose clamp closest to the mast on the stainless steel tube without removing the tubing which is secured t6o the mast step under the mast.

My tubing was also very corroded at its end under where the hose was connected. I had the corroded part cut off and had a 316ss stub welded in its place. I think I discussed this elsewhere on this forum.

Thanks all. This is exactly what I needed. Will have them lift the boat, change that hose under the mast, and check the stainless steel tube too in conjunction with the standing rigging replacement while the mast is off. Next bottom job will also have the hose beneath the boat checked.

Anyone know the exact size of the hose inside the bilge that the pennant goes through? I found one post that said it was either 1.5" or 1.25". Can anyone confirm? I'm having my rigging work started next week, and the riggers are going to do a short haul to replace that hose before removing the mast. Would like to have the hose ready. Thanks, Zach

Not at the boat, but I don't think that the hose is that large. Seems like the S/S tube is 1" tubing, so 1" hose (highest grade) would do the job. I wonder if we're still restricted to the use of the wire reinforced hose that's been around for fifty years or more; isn't there a "modern" alternative? I understand "tried and true", but we're not still using sitka spruce masts and hemp shrouds.

Taking the boat over mid week. Anyone happen to know for sure on the exact size of the hose inside the bilge that the pennant goes through?

Just checked the one I removed, it is 1'' o/d 3/4'' id. It showed a significant amount of crevice corrosion under the hose.In a past life my boat got water about 9'' over the floor when this tube sprang a leak !
