While replacing all the standing rigging, I have also decided to replace a very dated Hood jib furler. I am leaning toward the Profurl NC 42. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Not an expert on the topic of furlers, but we installed a Harken Unit 2 Mk IV (Note: not the cruising unit) and are very happy with it. I have been impressed with the furler construction, easy of use and maintenance.

I really dont think you can wrong with any of the major brands, Harken, Schaffer, Profurl, Hood, etc. I would stay away from CDI.

I have had a Schaefer 2100 furler on for about 12 years with no issues, robustly built. Like Chef states, I don't think there are too many bad ones out there, just stick to the big names and you can add Furlex to the list, a friend has one and likes it....

I have a Harken II and had a Schaefer Sea Furl before that. I am not sure why I changed. I liked both of them they worked fine. Key point is to have an appropriate halyard restrainer (there are several makes--I have the simplest and cheapest and it works fine) at the top of the mast to hold the jib halyard from getting fouled in the furler mechanism, or the spinnaker and secondary halyards. Installs just below the sheave opening to hold the halyard from getting wrapped in the furler or spinnaker halyard. I blamed my Sea Furl for problems that really were due to not having a halyard restrainer to keep it from fouling.

FWIW...the Harken Unit comes with the restrainer
