Anyone familiar with ladder mounts for the side deck? I'd like to move my lifeline gates to mid ship from the cockpit, and replace the stern ladder with a mid ship ladder. The best gate location in my mind is just forward of the outboard genoa tracks, but if the typical ladder mount uses the tracks, then I need to locate the gates accordingly. That would be a few feet aft, or maybe more likely one lifeline section aft. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, but I liked the idea of the gate being at the widest section of the hull while docking.
Maybe some ladders use mounts that are bolted through the side deck, but I don't relish the idea of additional holes through the deck. Seems like the mounts would be toe stubbers or yet another obstacle for the genoa sheets to snag.

Doug,

My gates are located at the forward end of the Genoa track. Here is a picture from my first visit to the boat - pre-purchase.

I too have been considering a midship boarding ladder. My reasons are I want to install wind vane steering and at midships it would be easier to board in a rolling sea. I have yet to tackle this project but would interested in your results.

I will let you know the options and pricing I find. I'll be checking with Tops in Quality and Garhauer in the next couple of weeks.

This topic came up on the old Tartan forum several years ago... well, maybe 10 years ago. My boat has a detachable side mounted and rear mounted ladder but was the heavy plastic folding type. It works, but I wanted a stern ladder so went to Tops in Quality for that. But for the side boarding ladder there are apparently types that are stainless and fold up, and I believe slide fore and aft to clear the gate when at dock. The downside is that you have a permanently folded ladder at the toe rail and I tend to get my sheets tangled in enough items on the deck and mast that I don't need any more. I agree though, that the side mount is better in rolling seas.
