I will be making new lifelines this winter. Has anyone done this? I recall seeing something in the sailrite catalog. Any suggestions?

Will be hauling out next week. That time again. I really have noticed the motorboat guys leaving the sport in droves. I think its the economy and the old guys are hangin it up while the young guys dont seem to have an interest in it. sad

Seems the trend is no cover on the stainless, saw most boats at the show doing this. Plus I should last longer if the stainless is allowed to breath Cheers Post pics...I would like to see how it turms out

I like the bare wire plan better. No cracking or color change in cover. Just havent seen too many boats with this, but havent paid much attention either. Should be easier and quicker if I dont have to precisely cut cover flush with fittings.

I replaced mine last year. Went with Rigging Only (no affiliation) for the fittings etc. I also put in a gate on each side since we never had an opening in the lifelines before. I went back and forth with the covered vs bare and went with the covered, I figured if the originals lasted thirty years, I should get a good life out of them as well. Tom at Rigging Only is a knowledgable guy and thought that it would be fine either way. He cut the cover off the lifelines about 1/2 inch short of the fittings so you can observe any corrosion.
This is an easy job, just measure the old, order, install, done. I would have a professional do the swaging, unless you're going with swageless fittings.

second Rigging Only. Very professional and helpful.

I went with the plastic cover on the same logic, but haven't actually installed them yet as I went without the gate and have kind of got used to the gates that are there now!

Stantion life lines are coming along nicely. Waiting and waiting on a couple of fittings and then I can finish it up. I went with the 1 X 19 bare cable. Real good deals on the stuff. I bought it for .95/ft. Whole project should cost under 400 bucks with the swage tool. I can loan it out if someone wishes. Just need to get the fittings. carl

Carl,

I may take you up on that. Where are you located?
