We built a mattress topper by sewing together two layers of "egg crate" foam topped by a layer of memory foam, then a home made fitted sheet. We laid this "mattress" on top of the hard original cushions. It is now more comfortable than my bed at home. Just harder to get to the storage underneath!

Regarding the v-berth, we did the following, which we're finally very pleased with the results. When we replaced our v-berth cushions, we used 4" foam. I can't recall the firmness of the foam, but we selected the firmness that felt best. Those cushions alone were ok, but the comfort level wasn't as good as we had hoped. We then purchased the Froli Sleep System (http://www.nickleatlantic.com/), which is an ingenious spring system. This system significantly improved the comfort. Last Spring, we purchased custom-fitted pillow-top pads from Tufted Topper (http://www.tuftedtopper.com) for the v-berth with fitted sheets. This last addition has made our v-berth as comfortable as our bed at home. Couldn't be happier.

I am going to try the foam with a sewn cover. I need to do some sewing this winter and this sounds like an easy and economical approach. The problem I was having with foam over the cushions was the gap between the berth cushions would open up in the middle of the night. Uncomfortable. I was trying to think of something to hold the two halves together too. Possibly a sewn case for these too. Carl, Mawky, Ser 295

I hinged mine in the middle with material, you don't fall through! See "V berth modification" or this link viewtopic.php?f=5&t=130&hilit=
