I'm guessing just time and familiarity. You could rig a senso so it makes the truck backing up sound in reverse. Cool beep beep beep...

I will have to check my shaft key too. I hear a slight clack noise when I put the trans in gear. Is there such a thing as a normal noise?

After our replacement shaft, there was only the trans "clunk" when going in gear. It's a quicker, tighter, and quieter sound. Hard to hear the change when spread over 25 yrs, but I must say those last seasons before the failure, I was thinking the sound was too much. But I didn't check it out after others convinced me it was always like that. Moral: Trust your gut.

If the problem is the transmission, I would not attempt the repairs. The transmission on a Westerbeke 44A is a JS BW7 Transmission 2.47:1 Reduction Gear. Working on it takes a variety of special tools and knowledge. I'm not sure what transmission is on the Westerbeke 40. I'd check the service manual for the transmission before attempting any repairs. Westerbeke should be able to provide a source for the service manual. Jay.
