One of the tricks to getting any hose not to smell is not to have sewage sitting in the hose for extended time. Vacu-flush suggests some ways to do that on their website. But basically they have all hoses coming out of the top of the tank and the drainage hoses just extend straight down to the bottom of the tank with a 30 degree angle cut on the end. That way when pumping out nothing sits in the hose as residue drains back into the tank. They also advise using the expensive hose. If you read any of Peggy Halls books ('The Head Mistress') she suggests the same thing - Keep sewage from sitting in hoses and you will reduce the smells.

That looks very much like the one I pulled from my boat this fall (except mine was considerably dirtier). I intend to replace mine with a much larger one (45 gals). It is V-shaped and will fit into the area just forward of the inset in the V-berth and behind the middle bulkhead. All hoses will enter from the top so that no fluids remain in the hoses.

I would suggest for all sailors to read a book by Peggie Hall
"Get Rid of Boat Odors - A Guide To Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor".

I will also document the installation of my new holding tank this coming spring.
