I did a lot of the manual labor while we were on the hard. Connie and I pulled out cabinetry so that the yard guys didn't have to. We emptied the stern lockers and cleared out areas so they could get in and do repairs. I even pulled off the quadrant to save myself some $85/hour labor. When I put the quadrant back in and tensioned the cables, I took the time to make sure that the knot on the wheel and the rudder were aligned. The current steering is much stiffer than before. It is not quite as hard as when the wheel brake is on. The Admiral likes it but I'm not sure if I have too much tension on the system.

I voted one finger to steer. That has conditions. If the boat is sitting still and not underway, it takes little or nothing to turn the wheel. I like a lot of feedback from the rudder and I get that.

I didn't vote, but I think back to the Pearson 10M I had - tiller steered. Sweet, instant feedback. Get her clicking 9 off waves South of St. John and the ol' dynamo hum would start. I like the sensitivity. You want to dampen down, do so. Seems as though resistance means unnecessary friction if the dampener is all the way off.

Just sitting there should be one finger steering, when sailing it depends on the conditions and the load on the rudder. I added a grease fitting to mine (just below the stuffing) and grease up each year and I find that really helps.

Very light. One finger in slip. Underway, no sails, flat water. it's not enough tension to maintain course.

Ditto for me. The boat will steer itself, however, in very light, consistent wind and no sea. And it does not change a lot when things get snotty. I have the deep keel version, so I am not sure this handling is the same for the CB version. It is as sweet sailing boat as I have ever sailed in my 50 years of sailing and deliveries.
