We're in the process of rebedding the stanchions. You know, because it was raining inside the pilot berth every time the deck got wet: the diagonal strut for the boarding gate had lost all its sealing capability.

Two questions:

1. Does anyone know if exact replacement stanchion bases are available? The ones I've found online have a rectangular bolt pattern. Our stanchion bases have a trapezoidal pattern; the inboard screws are closer together than the outboard ones.

2. Does anyone think it's a good idea to use some 4200 or butyl to seal between the stanchion and the base? Without any sealant, it seems like water will wick in between the metal parts and then it has nowhere to go. When we removed the stanchions there were little piles of rust and dirt in the center of most of them.

Thanks again.

We replaced ours a few years ago after trying to get them cleaned up. We were able to get the same base.
We got them from Brewers Marine in Hamilton Ont.

Our stanchions are now polished and re-installed.

We found plywood core in pretty good shape under all the bases except the diagonal supports for the boarding gate. Those were into balsa with just self-tapping screws through the fiberglass. The sealant had failed and the core at the front boarding gate was well saturated with water. It came out (using the allen wrench in a drill trick) feeling like sticky mud. We cleared out a bunch of it, let it dry for a week, then filled it with epoxy. And of course we through-bolted everything with new hardware and new G10 backing plates.

We sanded down the nonskid under the stanchion bases so they will sit flatter against the deck.

For sealant, we put butyl around all the bolt holes and the inboard, forward, and aft edges. We left the outboard edge unsealed so water that gets in between the stanchion and the base has, theoretically, a way to drain out.

If you ever need lifeline stanchings, bases, White Water Marine will have them or can make them. Have used them several times, very fair prices and great service.
