I can only speak for myself and my boat. My original sheaves are worn as evidenced by metal debris and significant play from bushing wear. While paying $900 in parts is not something I want to do, replacing the original idler unit and chain/wire seems prudent before I get back in the ocean in a few weeks.

In the 30 years that my father in law owned the boat I was never aware of any routine maintenance performed on the steering. That alone makes me want to change out this hardware.

So, what problem are we trying to solve? Well, I'm trying to solve my own but figure others might benefit from my recent experience.

Looping back on this to show how badly the idler pulley pins were worn. Idler and chain replaced. Steering much better. Glad I did this before going 80 miles offshore last week delivering the boat from New England back to Annapolis.

Way cool info y'all.
Thanks.
Our 1978 Tartan38 svHajime has been in MX since late 2012, repowered in 2013 with a Beta30 still our gem. It's time to install an new cockpit sole and since I have to remove the steering to do this, thinking of replacing the idler and chain/cables.

In 2012 we had some weather heading north from San Francisco and at the first stop Fort Bragg / Noyo River and when I looked in the aft lazaret I found the boat had made gold dust for us!

One sheave had decided not to rotate on the brass pins (not sure why brass pins and bronze sheaves and carbon steel idler structure , but what the heck), attached are some photos of the assembly and pieces and parts. We have been keeping an eye on it ever since and plan to replace the idler assembly with the Edson - EDS 776AL-4AL from Fishery Supplies, looks like it might come in around $425: https://www.fisheriessupply.com/edson-m ... /776al-4al

I'll let y'all know how goes the re-fit...
