Hi there,

I've looked at a Tartan 37 today and one thing that I found that the steering wheel doesn't turn the same degrees to either side. I.e., it turns just 270 degrees clockwise from "rudder at dead center" and about 375 degrees counterclockwise. Obviously that's not how it's supposed to work.

Have you seen this before, would this be a big concern to you, what could be the cause, and what are potential remedies?

Thanks!
Dirk

Never saw or heard of that before. But in my opinion (and worth all you paid for it), I think your chain was regreased and put back on slightly off. My wheel only turns about 350° either way. I think if you actually move the boat, you will find the indicator will be off about 20° or so. The quadrant is probably hitting the hard stops above the rudder.

I once got on a boat that the owner regreased the chain. When he reinstalled the steering, he did not cross the chains in the pedestal. Spin the wheel to port and the boat went starboard. Made getting back to the slip interesting.

Turn the wheel all the way to the stop. Loosen the turnbuckles on the quadrant, pick up the chain and move the wheel until it is about 350° to the direction you turned. Drop the chain back onto the gears and go tighten the turnbuckles equally. This should get you close to center.

If you are close, you can slightly adjust wheel by adjusting the turnbuckles without moving the rudder itself.

At least I think you can do the last part. But not by yourself of course. Snicker

Thanks, that's good to know. Seems like the sum total turning degrees is not off, just the center alignment. I have an old VW Beetle where the steering wheel is put on about 20deg off. Sounds like the same case here and can be adjusted.

Our's is symmetric, about 330 deg both direction. I bet one of your stops have fallen off the bottom of the quadrant. I had one fail before, the bolt sheared.

I think this is a good time to inspect and lube your steering. Mine has about 1 1/4 turns either way, there is a large bolt in the rear center of the quadrant which stops at a pad each side on the hull.
Take cables of quadrant, remove compass, clamp rudder central, lift and lube chain and find its center, lock wheel and refit cables. While everything loose remove /check/ lube sheave axles. Edson suggest replacing chain and cables every10 yrs but that may be over cautious. Then steer with confidence!
