Holy crap. What an ordeal. 3 hours to get the prop off and replace the cutless bearing.

But the guy with the Endeavour 37 spent 3 DAYS doing it, and he pulled the shaft. I did it with the shaft in place.

Strutpro cutless tool. Slicker'n shit. It just took me the first hour trying to figure out how to use it on the prop - it wasn't designed for that - then the youngest showed up and with adult supervision it was over quickly. Neither the prop nor the cutless came out "easy." The new one pressed in perfectly.

The tool was $395.00. I figure the time the guy put into the Endeavor job, and the 2 of us for 2 hours (remember, I wasted the first hour ruminating) paid for it. Maybe I'll be a hero in Luperon or Independent Boatyard some day when I pull this thing out.

I only had about 1/8" of wobble, but I'm headed down the ditch, in and out, so a truly aligned shaft is going to be important.

The cutless coming out was the hardest part. Three cranks per nut and POP! Three more cranks per nut and "POP." It looks kinda like factory, like it was hammered in from forward and the POPs were some burrs on the heavy old cutless. I replaced it with a composite cutless. 1" shaft, 1.5" cutless O.D., 4" long, for the record.

I just talked with Gary at Martec in AZ and I'm going to send it off for refurb. and balancing. New 2 blade folding is going to be $1500 (he mentioned, when I asked about insuring the shipment with FedEx), so a refurb is the way to go. I also got meself some shark whatever line cutters coming. I'm getting too old to keep diving and cutting off lobster warp.

Gary finally acknowledged Martec received my prop today after over 2 weeks since shipping FedEx. $287.00 plus return shipping. Drilt out pin holes for larger pins, welded some bronze back on the bearing part of the prop and went all over them. Should look brand new. I guess they hadn't seen a ton of use.

I made a tool like that with a couple threaded rods, some nuts, and some conduit pipe I sawed in half lengthwise. Worked. Then I was care to put some sealant on the new one when I installed it. I have yet to have a need to replace it, so I do not know if the next guy will have a problem. I think I have about 2000 hours on this one.
