There you go. For those of you, like I, that always thought it was just a friggin' cable. Zoom in. Highly educational. The plastic slug (last photo?) on the end of the steel bar is a stop that fetches up against the boom end fitting inside. I wanted to flush the inside of the boom and service everything. The bushing that holds the block the cable rides on at boom end has to be carefully drifted out. Don't monkey it up. At this point, I see no need to take off the gooseneck end of the boom. There's nothing else in there except a wasp nest. I'll flush it out, dry it, sand the outside surfaces that will be painted, etch it with white vinegar, wipe it with a clean cloth, tape stuff off, tack rag the shit out of it and lay on a coat of Petit epoxy barrier coat primer. Sand it smoothish and lay on a coat of Epifanes 2 part linear polyurethane in either white white or cream. Probably white. End fittings will get carefully cleaned and primed likewise and spray finished with an automotive ceramic paint, being careful not to get anything on the boom mating surfaces. Spreaders will get done in the garage at the same time, since the damn rain keeps beating me.

Hi Skipper, appreciate your post and the photos, especially as a jammed outhaul car is threatening to ruin my summer. Tried to pull the whole mess our aft through the boom, but no dice. Where is the tube at the forward end of the rod located? Looks like one of the spacers for the main sheet bales, but I pulled all three and it didn’t help. Any thoughts on how to get this contraption out of my boom?

There's nothing in there but the contraption. No spacers for the bails. The bails are just thru bolted. Of course, that's not saying some other iteration of the assembly doesn't have bushings, in which case you'd need to carefully drift those out. Let me go out to the garage with a flashlight . . . yeah. Only thing to hang up on is the track screws which only extend in slightly.

I'd get a pokey stick at least 8' long, tie a messenger to the bitter end of your outhaul line forward, look up there with a flashlight and start poking and working the whole thing out aft. That's assuming you've got the boom end fitting off.

Zoom in on the 3rd photo. One fiddle block is attached directly to the spacer on the rod. The 2nd fiddle block trails that aft, and a cable comes off that fiddle block, goes around the sheave at the boom end fitting and attaches to the outhaul car on the boom. This is all the "stuff" up in there, again, unless someone added bail bushings at some later date. Or mine was changed out and they didn't put the bushings back in. You don't have to take the sheave off the boom end fitting if you don't want to. When the end fitting comes off the outhaul car will slide right out of the sail track.
